Review: The Merciless by Danielle Vega

The Merciless (The Merciless, #1)The Merciless by Danielle Vega
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: June 12, 2014
Purchase: Amazon
Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . .

In this chilling debut, Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page. By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

My Thoughts:
OMG okay you have to give me a minute to slow my heart!  This book was horror at its finest and exactly what I have been looking for!  It's gory, insane, brutal and just so in your face that it really should come with a warning!  My kind of book!

So basically in a nutshell Merciless is about a new girl (Sofia) who is befriended by a group of girls that pride themselves on being pure in Gods eyes.  When Riley (the head girl) gets cheated on she takes matters into her own hands and decides she needs to exorcise Brooklyn's (girl who was involved in the cheating) demons.  Well things go from just crazy to downright call the insane asylum nuts in about 2.2 seconds!

This book was a cross between The Craft, Carrie, The Crucible and Mean Girls.  It took all the things that we all loved about each movie and threw them together to create an amazingly creepy tale that I know will stay with me.  Riley does some pretty violent stuff and yes you will have to realize this is fiction.  Would half of this stuff really happen no of course not but if you can let reality go and you love scary then this book is for you.  I never knew who was the bad guy!  Was it Riley because of all her crazy stunts or was Brooklyn really possessed by a demon and on a killing spree??

The culprit isn't shown until the very ending and if you think you know how this story plays out think again my friend.  That very last page has left me with a huge WTH moment and yes I might have had a crazy MUAHAHAHA laugh.  That ending has to be one of my favorites of all time!  Brilliant!

I will say one word of warning here.  This book has a ton of religion in it and while it didn't bother me it might bother some.  I didn't feel preached to so that helped me see past all of that stuff and honestly the religion has to be in the story.  It is the central reason behind a lot of what goes on and the story wouldn't have been the same without it.

So if you are like me and just want a little more creepy on your shelves then this is for you.  The characters are all pretty insane and well I loved it what can I say.  I also appreciate the little romance thrown in.  Not sure it completely fit with the story, but it was a nice side touch.  I really liked Charlie and I am glad he was pretty much left out of all the craziness.  I like that this book revolved just around the girls.

Review & Signed Book Giveaway: Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Stolen: A Letter to My Captor by Lucy Christopher
Published May 4th 2009 by Chicken House Ltd

It happened like this. I was stolen from an airport. Taken from everything I knew, everything I was used to. Taken to sand and heat, dirt and danger. And he expected me to love him.

This is my story.

A letter from nowhere.

Sixteen year old Gemma is kidnapped from Bangkok airport and taken to the Australian Outback. This wild and desolate landscape becomes almost a character in the book, so vividly is it described. Ty, her captor, is no stereotype. He is young, fit and completely gorgeous. This new life in the wilderness has been years in the planning. He loves only her, wants only her. Under the hot glare of the Australian sun, cut off from the world outside, can the force of his love make Gemma love him back?

The story takes the form of a letter, written by Gemma to Ty, reflecting on those strange and disturbing months in the outback. Months when the lines between love and obsession, and love and dependency, blur until they don't exist - almost.

My Thoughts
Wow!! What an emotional, gripping and addictive book! I was hooked to this story from the beginning and despite how I knew nothing good would come of it, I drove head on collision with the conclusion and was left with a wreckage of angst and sadness.

But before I tell you how I really felt, excuse me a moment, while I self-reflect...

Felt an emotional pull toward the captor? Check.
Believed that he deserved some semblance of happiness because of his past? Check.
Recognized moments where the captor showed love and deep emotion toward the victim? Check.
Justified the captor’s actions because he provided a safe haven for the victim and wanted him to have a HEA? Check.

Well sweet painful HALE I think I’m a prime candidate for Stockholm Syndrome. Gah!

Stolen brought to the surface justifications I never thought I’d consider and deep feelings for Ty despite his heinous act toward Gemma. What a crafty author to be able to tamper with my moral compass without my awareness and create a story and situation where I wanted the captor to get an ending he really didn’t deserve.

In Stolen Gemma is kidnapped from her family in Bangkok Airport and taken to the Australian Outback by Ty, an emotionally disturbed young man. She fights despite futile efforts to get away, but after a series of close calls, she finds herself in a situation where she starts to see Ty through a different lens, one that includes sympathy, resolve, hidden beauty and love.

For me, I think my defenses toward Ty fell apart when he rescued Gemma from one of her escapes where she almost died in the desert. I started to wonder if there was some way these two could come to build a life together. Part of me carried some hope and the other part cringed. So much happened in this book and I think I internalized a ton of the emotion because I feel like I’ve been walking around in a daze since I started this story.

After all was said and done, I think the author ended the story appropriately (yes, there I go again with that word, but I think it fits here) because as much as I wanted Gemma to help free Ty and give him a second chance, I realized that sometimes you must pay the price for your crime before you get your reprieve.

This was definitely an angsty book that created conflicting emotions for me. Intense!!

Lastly… I hope someone went back to the shack and fed the chickens. I also worried about the camel. I hope she was able to find her herd. I know… I know.. I focus on the irrelevant details, but that’s just me.

Review: How It Ends by Laura Wiess

How It Ends by Laura Wiess
Published August 4, 2009
Publisher: MTV Books
Following her stunning and critically acclaimed novels Such a Pretty Girland Leftovers, Laura Wiess crafts a riveting and emotionally powerful tale of beauty, destruction...and love.

Seventeen-year-old Hanna has been in love with Seth for as long as she can remember, but now that she and Seth are in an actual relationship, love isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seth is controlling and all they seem to do anymore is fight. If that’s what love is, Hanna doesn’t want any part of it. Besides, she has something else on her mind: graduation. But she’s been ignoring the school’s community service requirement, and now she needs to rack up some hours in a hurry.

Hanna volunteers as a caretaker for her neighbor Mrs. Schoenmaker—an elderly woman with advanced Parkinson’s whose husband can’t always be there to watch over her. While caring for Mrs. S., Hanna becomes mesmerized by an audiobook that the older woman is listening to, a love story of passion, sacrifice, and complete devotion. She’s fascinated by the idea that love like that really exists, and slowly, the story begins to change her. But what Hanna doesn’t know is that the story she’s listening to is not fiction—and that Mrs. Schoenmaker and her husband’s devotion to each other is about to reach its shattering, irrevocable conclusion....

Spellbinding, timeless, and achingly poignant, How It Ends is a story of how love ends, how it begins, and how people and events have the ability to change who we are without our even realizing it.
My Thoughts
How It Ends by Laura Wiess is truly a powerful book in its own right and one that I won’t soon forget. I finished the book in the same manner as I started it – on the verge of tears. I plowed through most of this book at my local book cafĂ© and I’m sure the crowd around me witnessed a gamut of emotions cross my face as I journeyed through this novel filled with a well crafted plot, perfectly developed characters and a tumultuous end that had be gasping in shock and horror.

The story spans about three years and starts off with Hanna as a sophomore in High School. Her heart is set on getting the attention of Seth, a cool, guitar playing junior. When he finally notices her and they begin a relationship, it’s filled with hurt, betrayal and deceit. Confused by his treatment, she begins a community service project taking care of her terminally ill neighbor Mrs. Shoenmaker who is suffering from Parkinson’s. Hanna becomes consumed in the care for this older lady that she grew up with. They spend their time together listening to an audio book which is a story of love, devotion and ultimate sacrifice. This changes how Hanna begins to view her reality and the choices she’s made for herself, but the ending of this story becomes a reality she never imagined possible.

So many intricate characters made up this novel and each came with a back-story that demanded to be told. Some I couldn’t handle and others I wanted to hear more about. But, Hanna’s story was one the will stay with me for quite some time. I came to really care for her character. There were times that she made decisions that had me face palming, but she was so unapologetic about her choices and stood by what she decided that I couldn’t come to fault her. It was like witnessing my best friend make mistake after mistake and I just stood there dishing out the sympathy. Yes, she didn’t make the best of choices, but her growth and discovery along the way made every single mistake she made well worth the journey.

I know I wasn’t supposed to like Seth’s character. He lies, cheats, plays mind games with Hanna, but at the end of the day I felt sorry for him and hoped he achieved his own HEA.

Karate guy Jesse was shear perfection in this story and every time he made an appearance, I sat at the edge of my seat waiting for him to deliver his swoon worthy lines or actions. I knew immediately that beneath this guy that sported dreads, tatts, a leather jacked and rode a motorcycle was someone that deserved better than what life offered him. The scenes that involved this character were my favorite by far.

The ending in this story is one I never, NEVER expected. There was one scene that made me feel revulsion, despair, hurt, and shock. I’m still not sure if the hopelessness of the situation called for such action, but it is what it is and I was left in angst.

This book is not for the faint at heart, it’s filled with heavy themes and desperate decisions that result in pain. I was drawn into the lives of these characters and journeyed with them as they shared their story. I loved this book regardless of how it broke my heart. I’ll definitely make it a point to read Wiess’ other novels.

Upcoming Release: Wildflower by Alecia Whitaker

Wildflower by Alecia Whitaker
Expected publication: July 1, 2014
Publisher: Poppy
The best songs come from broken hearts.

Sixteen-year-old Bird Barrett has grown up on the road, singing backup in her family's bluegrass band, and playing everywhere from Nashville, Tennesee to Nowhere, Oklahoma. One fateful night, Bird fills in for her dad by singing lead, and a scout in the audience offers her a spotlight all her own.

Soon Bird is caught up in a whirlwind of songwriting meetings, recording sessions, and music video shoots. Her first single hits the top twenty, and suddenly fans and paparazzi are around every corner. She's even caught the eye of her longtime crush, fellow roving musician Adam Dean. With Bird's star on the rise, though, tradition and ambition collide. Can Bird break out while staying true to her roots?

In a world of glamour and gold records, a young country music star finds her voice.

My Thoughts
Wildflower by Alecia Whitaker was a perfect addition to my summer reading line-up. I enjoyed Bird’s story from the very beginning and journeying with her during her rise to fame was both rewarding and memorable. Definitely a great contemporary Young Adult novel that shouldn’t be missed by fans of authors such as Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols and Leila Howland.

At the age of sixteen, Bird Barrett has enjoyed traveling with her family singing bluegrass at small honky-tonks all over Nashville. Her instrument of choice is her trusted Maybelle fiddle, and her position in the family line-up is back-up vocals to her dad. During a fateful night at the Station Inn, her father falls ill and Bird is asked to take lead vocals for their scheduled performance. That night, she’s spotted by a talent agent and shortly thereafter signs a record contract with a newer music label. Life begins to take some sharp, drastic turns for this teen as she learns to manage a grueling schedule and demanding expectations from everyone around her. At a time when simply singing for a live audience is her passion and the boy that captured her heart is pulling away, Bird begins to wonder how much she has to sacrifice for this new life of hers.

Wildflower did an exceptional job of pulling in worthy themes into the novel to add depth and realism to the story. I appreciated learning about the physical, emotional and family strain fame brings to such a young star. Exhaustion from tabloid lies, long hours of songwriting, the stress of social media attention, and falling short of your family and friends’ expectations can be tough for anyone, especially someone as young as Bird. Wow! What a huge burden to place on such young shoulders.

I appreciated how throughout the entire novel Bird just wanted to do what was right for everyone involved in her life. She consistently showed that she wanted to help everyone she cared about and not let them down. As quickly as she realized fame, I liked the fact that Bird remained somewhat grounded. She was an easy character to care for, and she won my heart immediately. I loved the family dynamics that played out in the novel as well as the meaningful friendships that were fostered. Truly a story full of honest emotion and depth.

Wildflower is a great novel that explores fame, growing up, and the heartache of first love. Great story, fantastic narration and heartfelt plot that pulled me in and kept me vested. Well done!

Waiting on Wednesday, #55

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases we can't wait to get our hands on.

Here's my selection for this week...

The Young Elites (The Young Elites #1) by Marie Lu
Expected publication: October 7, 2014
Publisher: Putnam Books for Young Readers

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

I'm a huge fan of Marie Lu, and I was facinated by her Legend series from beginning to end..   I just know her upcoming series, The Young Elites will be just as captivating, so I can't wait to get my hands on this novel.

With any luck, I might just land one this weekend when my lovelies Crystal (my roomie here at WinterHaven and Rachel (one of my book besties at The Reader's Den) will be meeting for a fun time in  Las Vegas this weekend for the 2014 Annual ALA Convention. I'm sure I speak for my cronies as well when I say, we are so excited to get the chance to talk to publishers and meet some of our favorite authors. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and share the event with everyone when we return. So stay tuned!!!
Sooo, what book are you waiting on???

"The foundation on which I built my life is lying in pieces around me, but I can't stop to put it back together. I have a prison break to engineer, an innocent city to protect, a murderer to track down, and two power-hungry leaders who need to be stopped. Personal reflection will have to wait."

"You can't kill me." He sounds insulted.
I smile. "We both know I can."
"Samuel and Heidi would punish you in ways you've never dreamed."
My smile grows. "No, they wouldn't. I have to arrive in Rowansmark alive and well or they'll pay the consequence for their failure. You, on the other hand, never have to arrive at all." I turn my back on him and walk away.

Review: Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) by Tahereh Mafi

Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) by Tahereh Mafi
Published February 4th 2014 by HarperCollins

The heart-stopping conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, which Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, called “a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love.”

With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn’t know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won’t keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that’s not all he wants with her.

The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. Tahereh Mafi has created a captivating and original story that combines the best of dystopian and paranormal, and was praised by Publishers Weekly as “a gripping read from an author who’s not afraid to take risks.” Now this final book brings the series to a shocking and satisfying end.

My Thoughts
For so many years, I lived in constant terror of myself. Doubt had married my fear and moved into my mind, where it build castles and ruled kingdoms and reigned over me, bowing my will to its whispers until I was little more than an acquiescing peon, too terrified to disobey, too terrified to disagree.

Finally! One of those rare occasions where rooting for the underdog pays off! This series finale was absolutely epic and it reaffirmed my feelings that the most likely of heroes isn’t always the sure bet.

In this final installment of the Shatter Me series, Tahereh Mafi once again proves that she can blend action, romance and intrigue to create a spellbinding adventure. I’ve enjoyed this series from book one, and I can say with confidence that fans of Mafi willNOT be disappointed with the conclusion.

He leans into my ear. Lowers his voice. “Ignite, my love. Ignite.”
In Ignite Me, Juliette is shocked to find out that The Omega Point has collapsed and The Reestablishment as claimed yet another victory. Recovering from a fatal wound, Warner comes to her aid in the most unlikely of circumstances. As these two spend time together, she uncovers a whole new layer to this complicated character and begins to develop feelings for him.

He’s unraveling before me, becoming something entirely different; terrifying me in a way I never could’ve expected.

When she reunites with her friends, her new formed alliance with Warner shakes up the core of her unit and leaves her wondering who she can rely on to bring The Reestablishment down.

There were some tough moments to read in this story, especially between Juliette and Adam. Seeing what he was capable of, at times felt out of character, but somehow made the story more intriguing and dramatic. It was great to see the friendships between Juliette, Kenji, Castle, Brendan, Winston, Lily, Ian and Alia grow to a whole new level.

However, the epic event in this book was between Juliette and Warner. I could not have asked for anything more. Their moments were sincere, vulnerable and HOT! I knew from the beginning that Mafi could create some steamy moments, and HOLY HOTNESS she sure turned it up a notch in this book.

Overall, Ignite Me was a perfect conclusion to the Shatter Me series and I can’t wait to see what adventures Tahereh Mafi creates next. Well done!

Review: Just One Night by Gayle Forman

Just One Night (Just One Day #2.5) by Gayle Forman (Goodreads Author)
Published May 29th 2014 by Viking Children’s Books

After spending one life-changing day in Paris with laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter, sheltered American good girl Allyson “Lulu” Healey discovered her new lover had disappeared without a trace. Just One Day followed Allyson’s quest to reunite with Willem; Just One Year chronicled the pair’s year apart from Willem’s perspective. Now, back together at last, this delectable e-novella reveals the couple’s final chapter.

My Thoughts
Just One Night was exactly what I needed to bring closure to Allyson and Willem’s story. I loved their first two stories and I remember feeling after I finished the second book that I wanted just a few more chapters to see how these two would end up. Well…. Gayle Forman delivered in Just One Night.

I didn’t think I could fall in love with Willem anymore that I already did when he shared his perspective in Just One Year, but I did. I loved.loved.loved how these two characters finally realized their second chance and the conclusion was sheer bliss.

Forman’s novella was the perfect ending to the two book series. What a way to close the chapters on Willem and Allyson’s story. Perfect!

"Did you get your lot number?" I ask.
The spoon tinkles against Raven's cup, her hand trembling for the briefest moment. "Yeah." It's a stupid question--we all got our lot numbers last night. But I wanted to know what Raven's is. I want to know how much longer I'll be able to see my best friend.
"And?"
"Lot 192. You?"
I exhale. "197."
Raven grins. "Looks like we're hot commodities."
